In its heyday, Northwest Fifth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale was the hub of the black community's shopping and entertainment district. It's come to life again as part of an exhibit dubbed "Fabulous Forties on the Avenue." The exhibit, which features re-created storefronts, classic cars and a classroom, marks the library's 10th anniversary. Also within the gallery is a replica of the famous Victory Theater, with its marquee in bold purple letters. The movie theater within the gallery is showing classics and will offer free matinees every Saturday at 1 p.m. through October. On the walls of the exhibit at the library are quotes from residents who remembered the strip and life during segregation.
