A poignant and poetic play set in a 1929 Florida Cuban-American cigar factory. In the family-owned factory, cigars are still rolled by hand and lectors are employed to educate and entertain the workers. The arrival of a new lector is a cause for celebration. He unwittingly becomes a catalyst when he begins to read aloud from “Anna Karenina” to his avid listeners, for whom Tolstoy, the tropics and the American dream prove a volatile combination. Playwright Nilo Cruz's 2003 Pulitzer-winner challenges the professional, personal and sexual relationships among the factory’s workers, owners and family members. The romantic drama is presented in Spanish with English subtitles.
