The period between the 20th century's two World Wars saw the rise of both Fascism and unification in Italy. Period artwork reflected the political and cultural climate, fusing ancient elements with modern jingoism. The exhibit includes pottery that manages to look Etruscan and futuristic at the same time, vases that feature classical Roman design with subtle modern twists, posters with art deco echoes and juxtapositions of sword-wielding horsemen with modern steamships, and sleek, functional furniture that looks aggressively modern, even by today's standards. "Echoes and Origins" kicks off "Rebirth of Rome," a series of exhibitions that will be on display through the winter and into the spring. The exhibit opens Sept. 27 and runs through April 20, 2014.
